Remember: Words MEAN things

Welcome to 2012! Hope you all had a great holiday! Job woes aside, I spent my time with family, which always makes me happy. Plus…I got a Jaromir Jagr shirt and a Jimmy Rollins jersey…hello…best gifts ever! While shopping for the holidays I came across this… And of course it got me to thinking about this design and advertising business of ours…funny how when you love what you do, you always think about work…even away from work (or … Read entire article »

Infographic: The Weight of Wal Mart

This is a GREAT infographic. Now I will admit, at the start, I am an unapologetic WalMart consumer. The truth is, in this economy, with a family of 5? You cant beat the prices. And lets face it, every cent counts. But, for the sheer pictorial representation of raw data (which an infographic is SUPPOSED to be), this graphic rocks out loud. Kudos to FrugalDad for a well done piece. (View original post) … Read entire article »

The new Lexus ads for the holidays…effective?

Admittedly, I’m no commercial director. I’ve never done a spot for TV, nor even been involved in the process. But, much like a cabinet maker can discuss the intricacies of woodworking with a deck builder, or a rabbi can network with a priest about ministering to their congregations, I think we graphic designers ARE uniquely suited to discuss advertising with our television oriented colleagues. There is a new line of Lexus spots airing nationwide now to … Read entire article »

Idle Hands Are The Devil’s Playthings

“Idle hands are the Devil’s playthings.” Although there is some speculation that the original saying was “The Devil will find mischief for idle hands to do.” Either way, its quite true. This whole out-of-work thing isn’t good for me. I need to find a JOB. Seriously. Web design isn’t just my profession, it’s my hobby as well…so all of this time with no work to do is making me antsy. I’m like the little kid in the backseat of your long road-trip saying, “Are we there yet? Are we there yet?” I’ve taken to digging around on the web and finding every design, web, ad and branding agency within driving distance and sending them my resume. Whether they are hiring or not. Hey…I saw what the devil did to Linda Blair in “The Exorcist“…I don’t want … Read entire article »

The Search Continues…

As I sit here nursing the dregs of a little flu bug I caught from my brother over the Turkey Day weekend (I swear that from now on he will be known to the world as “Typhoid Cliff”…he got ALL of us sick), I’m happy because the fever has finally broken and my voice is sounding a bit less like a strangled toad. But at the same time, I am a bit down because the search for a new job continues. I find myself more and more referring to my own post on how to stay positive on the job hunt. I’ll let you in on a little secret here….I wrote that post to make myself be more positive. Really. Over the past couple of weeks, it seems to have had … Read entire article »

Job Search 101: Working with Recruiters

One of the greatest assets we have when searching for a job, can also sometimes be one of the most confusing. The recruiter. Most recruiters are good people, simply trying to earn their living by fitting the right peg (you) into the right slot (a job). But, there are a few recruiters out there who are a bit lackluster, and a very small minority who cannot be trusted even a small bit. Hopefully, by hearing what I … Read entire article »

A little diversion: Baby Salons

Before I do my post about dealing with recruiters, thought I would add a little diversion from my usual topics. I don’t typically write about my family here, choosing instead to focus on business pursuits, design and art in general, but this was so cute I had to share. Anyway, over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, we drove down to my mother’s place in Maryland for the big family feast. By we, I mean, myself, my fiancée, CJ (my son) and Maddy (my step-daughter)…the fifth of our little clan, my other step-daughter Shilo couldn’t join us for the trip due to school obligations. On the drive down…not sure how we got on the subject…CJ was telling us about an exercise in school where the teacher had the class think of places to … Read entire article »

Staying positive while looking for a job

Let me start by saying to those of you I’ve been annoying for the past few days talking about that great company I wanted to work at…? Yeah, I didn’t get the position. I’m told they liked me, but I wasn’t a good fit for the role they were actually hiring for. Of course, I can always hope they find a position I could have. But then again, I can always hope to win the … Read entire article »

Tip: Using CSS :focus for pop-up images

Here’s a great way to start your Monday…go learn how to use CSS :focus to change image displays. :focus, which is allowed on elements that accept keyboard events or other user inputs, to be applied to other elements.
