I thought Google’s Panda update was supposed to kill bad links?
A little under a year ago, Google’s algorithm update, codenamed “Panda” was all the rage on the interwebs. And by “rage” I mean, loads upon loads of site owners were mad enough to spit nickels. The DEATH of RDFa?
In their infinate wisdom, Google, Bing and Yahoo have announced a new initiative called Schema.org. The aim of Schema is to create and support a common set of schemas for structured data markup on web pages. Now, if you’re new to this concept, understand that the concept itself is NOT new. For years now, we have had 3 competing markup schemas: Microformats RDFa (Resource Description Framework – in – attributes) Microdata They each served a similar purpose. Say you’re the web designer / developer of a library website, and in your database you have thousands of books. Sites looking the same in all browsers? We dont need that! Or…do we?
There is a movement afoot in the web design world, and although well-meaning and well-intentioned, for many of us it can do more harm than good. Many incredibly good designers are getting behind this idea, and it’s quite hard not to agree with them. I mean, let’s be honest, when the likes of Dan Cederholm and Ethan Marcotte, authors of Handcrafted CSS: More Bulletproof Web Design and bloggers like Paul Boag all seem to be preaching the same sermon, and on top of that the sermon MAKES SENSE…how can we not get behind it?
