My newest favorite: Evernote

Honestly, I’ve mentioned this verbally to so many friends, I can’t even explain why I haven’t mentioned it here on the blog…I almost feel like I should apologize to anyone who reads this site. Or, to be honest I should have used Evernote to remind me to write about Evernote. I rarely say EVERYONE should add a tool to their arsenal, but today is one of those days. You see I’m the king of scrap pieces of paper to remind myself of stuff. Right now, within reach of where I’m typing, I have a piece of paper that says “soft soap, cat litter, shower gel….” (shopping list), another where I have loads of changes (on an intranet training piece I’m working on), a post-it that says “Rodrigo Y Gabrielle” (because I need to … Read entire article »

Lynda.com has a course on Android / iOS apps

I’m a big fan of the courses at Lynda.com…if you haven’t tried them, let me tell you they are WELL worth the investment. (I say this even though Lynda’s brother kicked me off his bulletin board / mailing list way back in the pre-interweb days.) Lynda.com has some great courses, and … Read entire article »

Looking for a job? Overused resume buzzwords

Let’s be honest here…writing resumes sucks. Really. I can’t think of anything more painful and tedious than writing about yourself, other than stating a straight up experience like you would in a blog. Figuring out what to include, what not to include and how to present it…wow…can I sign up to do that every day please? I think one of the main reasons we all seek a job where we can work for a long long time, right after stability and being part of great work that matters, is to avoid having to rewrite our resumes. Next time you’re updating your resume, you should also keep in mind this recent posting on the BusinessWire site: “LinkedIn Says Most Overused Buzzwords Are “Extensive Experience, Innovative and Motivated”” Ready for the Top 10? 1. Extensive experience 2. Innovative 3. Motivated 4. Results-oriented 5. … Read entire article »

WordPress Tip: Secret Keys

When you first install WordPress, it creates some default entries in your wp-config-sample file. “So what?”, you say, staring at the screen. Well, the problem is, the default info is the same for EVERYONE, and you should change it to make your install of WordPress a bit more secure, and less prone to hacking. The good news is, WordPress makes this EASY for you to do. … Read entire article »

WordPress Tip: All in One SEO Plugin

I am a big fan of the All In One SEO Plug-in by SemperFi Web Design. If you’re not using it yet, you should definitely give it a try. Quick Note: Nope, I don’t know any from SemperFi, nor do I get anything in return for this endorsement. If I like it, I endorse it. Plain as that. This plug-in allows you to set up loads of things that are needed for good SEO, and you can use all or just some of the settings. The settings I use are: Home Meta-tags You can set your home title, description and keywords directly in the plugin. Page Title Rewrite All In One SEO will rewrite your page titles to be more SEO friendly, removing unneeded words for you. Canonical URLs There has been some speculation that the canonical … Read entire article »
