So…uh…where ya from?
While watching one of the latest Geico gecko commercials, I was hit with a thought..completely apropos of nothing…when asked, where do you say YOU are from? Follow my line of reasoning here… The commercial made me think of the saying “Don’t mess with Texas”. And as I thought of it, I realized, no matter if you are from Dallas, Houston, San Antonio or even way down south in Victoria (my grandfather’s home town), you say you are … Read entire article »

Remember: Words MEAN things
Welcome to 2012! Hope you all had a great holiday! Job woes aside, I spent my time with family, which always makes me happy. Plus…I got a Jaromir Jagr shirt and a Jimmy Rollins jersey…hello…best gifts ever! While shopping for the holidays I came across this… And of course it got me to thinking about this design and advertising business of ours…funny how when you love what you do, you always think about work…even away from work (or … Read entire article »

Infographic: The Weight of Wal Mart
This is a GREAT infographic. Now I will admit, at the start, I am an unapologetic WalMart consumer. The truth is, in this economy, with a family of 5? You cant beat the prices. And lets face it, every cent counts. But, for the sheer pictorial representation of raw data (which an infographic is SUPPOSED to be), this graphic rocks out loud. Kudos to FrugalDad for a well done piece. (View original post) … Read entire article »

The new Lexus ads for the holidays…effective?
Admittedly, I’m no commercial director. I’ve never done a spot for TV, nor even been involved in the process. But, much like a cabinet maker can discuss the intricacies of woodworking with a deck builder, or a rabbi can network with a priest about ministering to their congregations, I think we graphic designers ARE uniquely suited to discuss advertising with our television oriented colleagues. There is a new line of Lexus spots airing nationwide now to … Read entire article »

The Search Continues…
As I sit here nursing the dregs of a little flu bug I caught from my brother over the Turkey Day weekend (I swear that from now on he will be known to the world as “Typhoid Cliff”…he got ALL of us sick), I’m happy because the fever has finally broken and my voice is sounding a bit less like a strangled toad. But at the same time, I am a bit down because the search for a new job continues. I find myself more and more referring to my own post on how to stay positive on the job hunt. I’ll let you in on a little secret here….I wrote that post to make myself be more positive. Really. Over the past couple of weeks, it seems to have had … Read entire article »

A little diversion: Baby Salons
Before I do my post about dealing with recruiters, thought I would add a little diversion from my usual topics. I don’t typically write about my family here, choosing instead to focus on business pursuits, design and art in general, but this was so cute I had to share. Anyway, over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, we drove down to my mother’s place in Maryland for the big family feast. By we, I mean, myself, my fiancée, CJ (my son) and Maddy (my step-daughter)…the fifth of our little clan, my other step-daughter Shilo couldn’t join us for the trip due to school obligations. On the drive down…not sure how we got on the subject…CJ was telling us about an exercise in school where the teacher had the class think of places to … Read entire article »

Staying positive while looking for a job
Let me start by saying to those of you I’ve been annoying for the past few days talking about that great company I wanted to work at…? Yeah, I didn’t get the position. I’m told they liked me, but I wasn’t a good fit for the role they were actually hiring for. Of course, I can always hope they find a position I could have. But then again, I can always hope to win the … Read entire article »

OMG what have I started?
That last post got me going…now I can’t stop. Several months ago my fiancee and I did this as well. We got to talking about old songs and bands and next thing you know we’re on YouTube playing all these songs we haven’t heard in years. And the whole time, Shi (my fiancee’s eldest) is staring at us like we’ve lost our everloving minds…. So all the 80′s music from the INXS post got me going, and … Read entire article »

Musical Muse: INXS
I had a great interview yesterday, one of those interviews where you pray and pray to get the job because you want to work at the company so badly. While there, I got to talking with one of my (hopefully) future co-workers about music and our musical backgrounds in particular. Now, anyone who knows me, knows I am a music freak. FREAK. I listen to anything and everything, and despite my dislike for the genre in general, can even name a few country artists I like (Dwight Yoakam’s “Guitars and Caddilacs” changed my mind forever). Depending on my mood, the weather, how sleepy I am, or a million other tiny factors, I could be listening to Killswitch Engage one moment, then a 1920’s Louis Armstrong recording the next, and then … Read entire article »
