Illustration Friday: This week “Contraption”
If you’ve never been there, Illustration Friday is a site really worth checking out. Illustration Friday is a weekly illustration challenge. A topic is posted every Friday and then participants have all week to come up with their own interpretation. There are no winners or losers, no prizes other than having your work seen by folks the world over… the big draw here, IMHO, is the fact that they get the creative juices flowing. Its a GREAT exercise for your art muscle! My friends Steph, Yvonne and I did a version of this waaaaay back in the day. Only sillier. We would throw a bunch of words in a hat, and you drew out four words, and that became your subject. The most memorable for me would be the time Yvonne … Read entire article »

Infographic: Japanese Faux Amis
Another infographic I created: The Top 8 Japanese Faux Amis. Keeping with the theme of the others, these are Japanese words that, if used improperly have very different meanings. This was created for the blog over at Pimsleur Approach. Incidentally, may favorite is the one for the word “Kawa”….makes me giggle. … Read entire article »

Art Inspiration: Tavis Coburn
Tavis Coburn does work that seems like it is old, well worn and familiar, like your favorite pair of jeans, and at the same time, its something that a tiny voice digging at the back of your brain tells you has never been seen on this planet before. His is the work of 1940′s and 50′s comic books, mixed with pulp magazine covers, blended with the propaganda style of Soviet-era persuasion tactics, and neatly wrapped in a world where the Marlboro Man and the characters from I Love Lucy are playing Xbox in HD on a flat screen that doesnt come out for 5 more years. Get inspired… … Read entire article »

Design Inspiration: “Improves Digestive Transit”
C’mon. Let’s face it. As designers, very few of us get to work on the “sexy” projects. We’re not doing all the beer ads with ladies in bikinis or the ads for Trojan where we can hide playful innuendo. Most of us do ads, designs and websites for normal everyday stuff. And truth be told…what we do is HARDER. I mean, its easy to sell beer when you attach a scantily clad blond to it. But if you’re trying to sell refrigerators? Or car tires? Or “widgets”? But there are designers out there who have it even tougher than we do. Imagine trying to sell something, that, to be honest has one benefit that is hard to even SAY with a straight face. “It makes you poop. With regularity.” … Read entire article »

Art Inspiration: Kai Spannuth
Kai Spannuth is the brilliant artist behind Roughneck Rabbit and DPI Graphics. I somehow stumbled upon his work a couple of years ago, and after one look at Roughneck Rabbit (and the Roughneck Rabbit Fight Club!) I was hooked. I couldn’t stop giggling! Kai’s work combines horror and whimsy in ways that scream inspiration. His post-Anime meets Frazetta style is infectious, IMHO. I hope you enjoy his work as much as I do. Get Inspired! … Read entire article »
